This past election was a double edged
sword for the Gay and Lesbian community. The defeat
of the Republican Party was complete and we were able
to elect a man who has promised to include Gays and
Lesbians in any laws that affect us. President Obama
has said that he will actively work to repeal the Defense
of Marriage Act that "prevents a state
from having to recognize the legality of a same-sex
marriage performed elsewhere in the country."
President Obama has said that he finds DOMA
to be an "abhorrent law,"
but he still defines marriage as "between a man
and a woman." I guess we had to vote for someone
so he was the lesser of two evils in regards to Same
Sex Marriage. But with this victory came a very bitter
defeat. At least 4 Anti Gay propositions passed with
Prop 8 in California being the most disappointing.
The Mormon and Catholic Churches, who
both have histories of ATROCITIES and
BIGOTRY, were instrumental in passing
these Anti Gay propositions. Considering both organizations
have been HYPOCRITICAL in their stance
on "Traditional Marriage"
and "Same Sex Marriage,"
their involvement has been particularly galling. That
they are using the Bible to Justify Bigotry, is indefensible.
Passages of the scripture are being taken out of context,
twisted or OMITTED to support their
position on Same Sex Marriage. The ironic part of this
"struggle" is that the Religious
Right, regardless of color, are using many of the same
arguments against Same Sex Marriage that were used to
justify the denial of Civil Rights to people of color.
The Devil
Thinking that is being used to deny
the Human Rights of Same Sex couples, in the end, will
be defeated. Discrimination is illegal
and will eventually be found to be so. And those people
on the wrong side of this debate will have to answer
to their creator for sitting in judgment of other people,
and twisting the scripture to defend their lies, regardless
of what they call HER!
The elections of 2008
have awakened a sleeping bear with an estimated 600
BILLION DOLLAR spending power. If they think
they have won the battle, they are mistaken. All they
have done is recruit more soldiers to the other side
of the war! |
